DIY Double-Pole Breaker

A double-pole breaker is used to supply 240 volts of electricity. It does this by drawing two 120-volt circuits on different sides of the electrical panel. This type of breaker is required to have both switches connected by a steel bar. This causes both breakers to open if one opens, completely shutting down the circuit. You can install a 240-volt breaker if you understand safe electrical practices. The most important step is turning off the power at the main breaker to make sure that you aren't electrocuted.

Instructions

  Turn off the power to the building by opening the main breaker. Confirm that the power is off by touching a noncontact voltage detector to the insulation of several wires. Also double-check that no device in the building has power.

  Remove the screws that fasten the cover on the panel and set the cover aside.

  Locate two breaker slots that are vacant beside one another. Open the breaker's switch and insert the double-pole breaker into the center. Push down on the outside until the breaker snaps into place.

  Loosen the breaker's two terminals and slide the red and black wires into each terminal. Tighten the terminal screws down.

  Loosen an empty terminal on the neutral bus bar, which has white wires. Insert the white wire and tighten it down.

  Loosen an empty terminal on the ground bus bar, which has green or bare wires. Insert the green or bare wire and tighten it down.
