How to Wire a Portable 220 Electrical Outlet

Whether a 220-volt outlet is fixed or portable, it is wired in the same fashion. A circuit of this type requires four conductors to provide a safe power supply. The red and the black wires deliver the power to the outlet. The white, or neutral, wire provides the path back to the source, and the green or bare wire is the backup safety system. Connecting these wires to the outlet is a simple process once you know where to fasten them.

Things You'll Need

  • Non-contact voltage detector
  • 220 volt portable outlet

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the power off at the source. Double check to ensure the power is off by touching a non-connect voltage detector to the wire's insulation.

    • 2

Strip 3/8 inches of insulation off the black, red, white and green wires coming from the source.

    • 3

Loosen the four terminals on the back of the outlet with a screwdriver. Insert the green or bare wire in the green ground terminal and tighten it down.

    • 4

Insert the white wire into the center silver terminal and tighten it down.

    • 5

Insert the black and red wire into the two outside, bronze terminals, and tighten them down.
