How to Make a Homemade Wire Puller

Running wires through your automobile or home can be a challenge because wires sometimes take routes that are difficult to reach. Pulling wires through these sections is typically done with an electrician's fish tape. By pushing the tape through the difficult area, you can pull the wire back through by fastening it to the end of the tape. If you need to pull a wire, but don't own the right tool, you can make a wire fish with common household items.

Things You'll Need

  • Metal clothes hanger
  • Pliers
  • Wire cutters

Instructions

    • 1

Twist the hook portion of the metal hanger until it disconnects from the other end of the wire. Pull the hanger slightly apart.

    • 2

Cut the curled metal section off the end of the wire without the hook. Leave as much straight wire as possible.

    • 3

Bend the coat hanger as straight as possible using the pliers. Leave the hook end intact.

    • 4

Fold the hooked end forward in a loop to create a handle on the end of the puller.

    • 5

Grab the very end of the straight section with needle nose pliers. Rotate the needle nose pliers to create a small loop on the end. This is where you connect the wire to pull it through the wall.
