How to Rat-Proof Wiring

Rat-proofing electrical wiring can be a big job depending upon the amount and location of the wire. It is an important task, because rats chew on electrical wires and cause fires. Every effort needs to be made to get rid of the rats since they carry disease, fleas and ticks. Their constant urination results in filth and odor. Discourage and prevent rat infestations by covering garbage containers and by not leaving food and animal feeds uncovered and accessible to the rodents.

Instructions

    • 1

Place electrical wiring in conduit and connect it to outlet and switch boxes with conduit box connectors. The conduit can either be rigid or thin-walled.

    • 2

Inspect junction boxes to ensure they have metal covers tightly secured with screws.

    • 3

Protect extension cords by keeping them off of the floor, running them through PVC pipe and sealing the ends with duct tape or wrapping them in duct tape. Rats don't like the sticky glue on the tape and will not chew through it.
