How to Install a Pass & Seymour Self-Contained Rocker Wall Switch

A Pass & Seymour self-contained rocker switch looks different from standard on/off switches that mount in the middle of the housing and protrude through a wall plate. A rocker switch covers the entire face of the switch housing. It bolts into a standard electrical gang box and actually is wired in the same way as a standard on/off switch. The installation process is relatively simple.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the breaker that provides power to the room where you plan to install the rocker switch.

    • 2

Remove a 1/4-inch of insulation from each wire that comes out of the breaker panel. There will be a black wire, a white wire and a green wire.

    • 3

Locate the three holes on the back of the rocker switch. Pass & Seymour rocker switches use a "stab-in" connector. This means you simply press the exposed end of the copper wire into the hole, and it locks into place.

    • 4

Press the black wire into the hole labeled "Positive-In." Press the white wire into the hole labeled "Neutral-In" then press the green wire into the hole labeled "Ground-In."

    • 5

Remove 1/4-inch of insulation from the wires that go to the light fixture. Press the black wire into the hole labeled "Positive-Out." Press the white wire into the hole labeled "Neutral-Out" then press the green wire into the hole labeled "Ground-Out."

    • 6

Tug on all of the wires to ensure the locks are engaged and the wires cannot slip out.

    • 7

Press the wires into the gang box and seat the rocker switch mounting brackets against the mounting tabs on the gang box. Secure the rocker switch to the mounting brackets with a screwdriver.

    • 8

Place the rocker switch cover over the rocker switch then snap it into place with your fingers.
