How to Connect a Windmill to a Grid

If you've gone to the expense and trouble of having a wind turbine installed, or installing one yourself, you now want to connect it to the electrical grid. This way, it can feed your own home's energy needs and, if the turbine is producing more electricity than you are using, it will send the excess power back to the grid. This will drive your meter backward -- and lower your power bill.

Things You'll Need

  • Inverter
  • Surge protector

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the power at the main breaker box. No power should be coming into the house from the grid while you connect the wind turbine to the electrical system.

    • 2

Connect the wiring from the wind turbine to an inverter. The wiring specifications will vary by manufacturer, but the purpose of the inverter is to ensure that the alternating current coming from the wind turbine matches the phase, voltage and frequency of the current already in the grid. This will keep your wind turbine from damaging the grid.

    • 3

Hook up your main breaker board to the middle position on the electrical relay. Connect the output wire from the inverter to the NC position (normally closed) of the relay switch.

    • 4

Attach the wire coming in from the electrical grid to the NO position on the relay switch (normally open). Then, connect the field coil poles between the ground and hot wires on the wind turbine.
