Instructions for Fused Outlet Boxes

A fused outlet box provides a way of protecting an individual circuit directly at the receptacle. The fuse's job is to turn off the power by disconnecting the power source when it detects excessive current. This prevents wires from melting and a possible electrical fire. Installing a fused outlet is done in the same fashion as a regular outlet except that you need to install the correct size of fuse before it will work.

Instructions

  1. Installation

    • 1

Turn the power off for the circuit you are working on at the electrical distribution panel. Confirm that the power is off by touching a non-contact voltage detector to the wire's insulation.

    • 2

Strip 3/8 inches of insulation off the wires in the electrical box. Loosen the grounding screw in the back of the box and wrap the green or bare wire around this screw. Tighten the screw down to hold the wire in place.

    • 3

Loosen the brass terminal on the outlet. Wrap the black wire around this terminal and tighten it down.

    • 4

Loosen the silver terminal on the outlet. Wrap the white wire around this terminal and tighten it down.

    • 5

Push the wires into the electrical box. Secure the fused outlet to the electrical box with the two screws provided.

    Operation

    • 6

Determine the correct size of fuse for the outlet by looking at the maximum amp capacity recorded around the fuse slot. For a typical outlet a 15-amp fuse is used. A circuit's amp capacity is determined by the gauge of the electrical wire used and the maximum capacity of the main breaker.

    • 7

Twist the fuse into the slot with your hand, until it is snugly in place.

    • 8

Plug the device into the outlet.

    • 9

Replace the fuse with an equal sized one if it blows. You can tell a fuse is blown because there will be no power at the outlet and the wire connection in the fuse's window will be burnt and disconnected.
