How to Install a Tandem Twin Square D Breakers

Adding a circuit to your home maybe necessary to finish your basement, add a bathroom or renovate a room. If every slot in your distribution panel is full, you can install a tandem twin square D breaker to create two circuits from a single breaker slot. These are installed into the panel using a similar method to installing any breaker. They are wired as two separate circuits independent of one another. Always practice safe electrical practices when working around electricity.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the power off to the electrical panel by opening the main breaker. Confirm the power is off by making sure no device in the home has power. Double check the power is off touching a non-contact voltage detector to several wire's insulation.

    • 2

Remove the four screws that secure the cover on the electrical panel. Pull the cover off and set aside.

    • 3

Open the new breaker's switch so that it is in the "Off" position.

    • 4

Insert the tandem twin square D breakers into a single spare slot in the panel. This is done by tilting it towards the center and pushing the center in first. Then pushing down on the outside of the breaker until it snaps into place.

    • 5

Insert the black wire's from each of the two circuits into each of the terminals on the new breaker and tighten them down.
