How to Install a Doorlite

When you purchase a metal garage door, it usually comes without built-in windows. With a Doorlite kit, you can quickly install windows into your garage door or into any other door that you want to install a window. The process is straightforward and will only take a short time to complete. However, to ensure proper fit, pay particular attention to cutting the hole in the door to the proper size.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the frame of the Doorlite with a tape measure. Add ½-inch to the height and width to allow for a ¼-inch gap around the frame.

    • 2

Transfer the measurements to both sides of the door. It is imperative that the outlines match up perfectly. Measure off the same surfaces, such as the strike edge of the door and the bottom edge of the door. You can place the Doorlite anywhere on the door. However, Doorlite recommends a height approximately 12 inches from the top of the door.

    • 3

Drill a ½-inch hole though both sides of the door with a hand drill and drill bit. Place the pilot holes on the inside of the marked rectangle in each of the four corners. This makes cutting out the panel for the Doorlite easier.

    • 4

Place the blade of your saber saw though the top left hole and then cut from left to right until you reach the top right hole. Cut from the top right hole, down to the bottom right hole. Cut from the bottom right hole to the bottom left hole, and then cut from the bottom left hole to the top left hole. Pull the cut section out of the door.

    • 5

Remove burrs from the cut edges with a file. Be careful not to cut yourself on the freshly cut metal.

    • 6

Place masking tape around the hole but position it far enough away from the hole that the Doorlite will not touch the tape when you install it.

    • 7

Place the front of the Doorlite panel, with the glass, into the hole on the outside of the door. Place the back panel in the hole on the back of the door. Line the two pieces up together and then drive two screws through the screw holes in the back of the panel to hold the two pieces together.

    • 8

Level the Doorlite in the door, and then trace the Doorlite onto the tape with a pencil.

    • 9

Remove the screws from the Doorlite, pull off the adhesive backing on the back of the Doorlite sides, and then line the Doorlite up with the tracing on the tape.

    • 10

Secure the Doorlite pieces together with the supplied screws and screwdriver.
