Honeywell Thermostat Problem: Fan Runs

If you have recently installed a Honeywell thermostat and notice the fan runs regardless of the setting you choose, it is likely incorrectly wired. Even if a professional installed your Honeywell thermostat, a simple mistake can leave your fan running around the clock. This is not uncommon, as most Honeywell thermostats have several wires of varying colors and one misplaced connection can cause operation problems. You can fix the problem yourself and do not need to hire a professional electrician.

Instructions

    • 1

Find your installation or owners manual for your Honeywell thermostat. If you cannot find it, visit Honeywell's website and navigate to the "Thermostats" link under the "Products" tab. Select your model and download the manual.

    • 2

Switch off the circuit breaker powering your Honeywell thermostat on the main electric panel in the house, garage or basement.

    • 3

Pull or pop off the thermostat cover with a flathead screwdriver, exposing the mounting screws.

    • 4

Unfasten the mounting screws with a Phillips screwdriver and pull your Honeywell thermostat off the wall.

    • 5

Inspect each wire to ensure all the wires are connected; also take specific note of how each wire is connected. Consult the manual and check each wire one by one to ensure each is properly connected to the appropriate terminal. Disconnect any incorrectly placed wires by unfastening the terminal screws with a screwdriver and connect the wires to the right terminal.

    • 6

Push the wiring back into the hole in the wall and press the Honeywell thermostat against the wall, aligning the holes in the thermostat with the holes in the wall. Insert and tighten the mounting with a screwdriver. Then replace the cover and turn the circuit breaker back on to finish.
