Wiring Instructions for Sycom Surge Suppressors

You probably have surge protectors scattered throughout the house, protecting your computer and media system. However, many homes and businesses lack complete protection, with other outlets and appliances remaining unguarded. Sycom addresses this issue by making whole-structure protectors that mount in your electrical breaker box, stifling surges at the point of entry. These compact protectors guard against external lightning surges and those dips and peaks created by high-draw appliances. Wiring these protectors is not complex, but caution should be observed whenever working in your electrical panel.

Instructions

    • 1

Access the main breaker panel. Shut off the power to the home by flipping the master switch or by pulling down the handle on the side of the box.

    • 2

Push the surge protector's mounting tabs into the receiving slots inside the breaker. Mount the device as close as possible to the neutral bus bar and one of the 120-volt single pole or 220-volt dual pole breakers. The neutral bus is indicated by the main white wire leading to a separate bus bar. The 120- or 220-volt breaker is indicated by a label and/or the presence of one single or dual joined switches.

    • 3

Trim the two black and single white wires as short as possible, while allowing a slight amount of slack to avoid strain or stretching of the wires. Strip 1/2 inch of insulation from the three wires protruding from the device.

    • 4

Loosen a screw on the main neutral bus bar. Insert the white wire. Tighten the screw securely.

    • 5

Loosen the single screw adjacent to each of the paired 40-amp, 220-volt breakers, if using the 120/240-volt model of surge protector. Loosen a single screw adjacent to one of the single-switch (pole) 20-amp breakers if using the 120-volt-only version. Slide one black wire into each of these screws. Tighten them.

    • 6

Turn the main electrical power switch or handle back on. You should see the green indicator light activate on the device.
