How to Replace a Sylvania R38 Breaker

Replacing a Sylvania R38 circuit breaker is a job that can be done in just a few minutes with a screwdriver, but requires careful attention to avoid being shocked by electrical current. The R38 circuit breaker is very similar in design to most other breakers, with slots in the back of the unit that slip over the metal plates in the back of the breaker box to make the electrical connection.

Turn off all the branch circuit breakers in the breaker box and turn off the main circuit breakers before replacing the Sylvania R38 breaker. Unfasten the screws that secure the cover plate to the breaker box with a screwdriver and set the cover out of the way.

Locate the circuit breaker that needs to be replaced and gently pry the breaker away from the center of the breaker panel with a screwdriver. Always use a screwdriver with an insulated handle to protect yourself from electric shock.

Pry the circuit breaker off the metal plates in the breaker box and loosen the screw on the side of the breaker you are removing with a screwdriver. Remove the electrical wire from around the screw and discard the circuit breaker.
