How to Cap an Electric Meter Socket

An electric meter socket is the rectangular or circular metal housing that the electric meter plugs into. The electric meter socket typically has three pairs of upper and lower terminal lugs where the two power lines, plus one neutral line, are individually connected. Capping an electric meter socket is a simple task that involves plugging the meter upright into the meter socket.

Examine the electric meter and locate the two pairs of copper prongs set perpendicular to each other behind the meter. Note that each of these prongs plugs into a matching clip inside the meter socket. Wipe the clips to make sure they are clean and free of oil.

Position the electric meter upright in front of the meter socket with the front of the meter facing toward you. Carefully slide the meter into the opening while aligning the meter so that each of the copper prongs behind the meter engages its matching clip inside the meter socket.

Push the meter firmly against the socket and give the meter a slight whack to fully engage the prongs into the clips. Shake the meter lightly to make sure it is not loose. Replace the face of the meter box or screw the circular clamp around the edge of the electric meter to lock the meter in place. Call your local utility company to seal the meter.
