How to Use a Radio Shack 8-Range Multitester

The RadioShack 8-Range Multitester is an analog multimeter that allows you to test different properties of an electrical circuit, such as AC voltage, DC voltage, current and resistance. The scale or range of values to be measured can be adjusted as appropriate to the amount of electricity in the circuit being tested. Because this is an analog multimeter, you have to calibrate it to its specific range and measurement.

Instructions

    • 1

Plug the probes into the multimeter. The black lead corresponds to "COM" and the red lead corresponds to to "VA+."

    • 2

Set the dial to measure resistance, and touch the probes together. Turn the center screw to adjust the meter to zero.

    • 3

Set your multimeter's dial to the highest range for whatever measurement you want. The Radio Shack 8-Range Multitester has a maximum AC and DC voltage load of 1,000 volts. Its maximum resistance is 100,000 ohms and its maximum current is 150 milliamps.

    • 4

Apply power to the circuit you want to test if you're testing for voltage or current. If you're testing resistance, remove power.

    • 5

Place the probe of the red lead against the positively charged terminal of the circuit, and place the black lead against the negative terminal. Look in the top third of the dial for the measurement. Adjust the measurement range down as necessary.
