How to Build With Conduit Pipe

Conduit is metal or PVC pipe that is used to protect electrical wires. It is required by building code to protect conductors that are exposed outside the wall system. This prevents people from being electrocuted or water corroding the electrical wire. Conduit should run more than 18 inches from the ground and have less than 360 degrees of corners in any one run. This is to make pulling the wires through the pipe possible.

Things You'll Need

  • Measuring tape
  • EMT conduit
  • EMT bender
  • Conduit supports

Instructions

    • 1

Plan your path between the source of the power and the destination. This path should be have straight and vertical sections with 90 degree turns.

    • 2

Sketch the conduit path on a piece of paper and measure the individual sections with a measuring tape. Record these measurements on the paper along with the number of degrees of each turn.

    • 3

Measure the first straight section on the conduit and mark the center of the first turn with a marker. Write the number of degrees for that turn on the pipe. Repeat this process to mark each corner and the size of its turn.

    • 4

Insert the conduit in the EMT bender and align the corner marking with the handle of the bender. Place the conduit on the ground with the EMT bender's handle upwards and press on the handle with both hands until the conduit has the correct size of turn. Repeat this process to bend each corner in the conduit.

    • 5

Hold the conduit in position against the wall. Secure to the wall every three feet with a conduit support screwed into the wall.

    • 6

Insert the fish wire in one side of the pipe and push it until it comes out the other end. Tie the electrical wire to the end of the fish wire and pull it back through the pipe. You may need to work it back and forth to get past corners.
