Four Pole Dimmer Switch Installation

A four-pole dimmer switch allows three separate switches to activate a single light or set of lights. The dimmer switch provides both on/off capabilities and the adjustment of the volume of light provided. Wiring this arrangement is best done during the construction of a home, before the drywall is installed. This avoids opening up the walls to run connections between the switches. Working around electricity can be dangerous if you don't shut off the power first.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the power for the circuit you are working on at the home's distribution panel. Confirm the power is off by touching a non-contact voltage detector to the wire's insulation.

    • 2

Strip 3/8 inch of insulation off the black and white supply wires coming from the panel and the two wires delivering the power to the lights.

    • 3

Loosen the four terminals on the four-way dimmer switch with a screwdriver.

    • 4

Insert the black source wire in the top right hot terminal and tighten it down.

    • 5

Cut a 6-inch section of 14 gauge insulated wire and strip both ends. Connect this wire to the bottom left neutral terminal on the dimmer. Twist together the source white wire, the light white wire and the dimmer neutral wire with pliers and install a twist-on wire connector on top.

    • 6

Loosen the grounding screw in the electrical box. Wrap both bare wires around this screw and tighten it down.

    • 7

Wrap the black hot wire, delivering power to the light, around the top right hot connection and tighten the terminal screw down.

    • 8

Strip the end of a new section of wire. Connect this wire to the bottom right terminal on the dimmer.

    • 9

Run the wire to one of the other switches in the three-switch arrangement. Cut the black wire for this switch and strip both ends. Twist together the wire from the dimmer with these two wires and install a twist-on wire connector on top.

    • 10

Push the dimmer into the electrical box and secure with the two screws provided. Place the faceplate over the electrical box and attach with the screws provided.
