How to Seal Electrical Penetrations in a Garage

Seal electrical penetrations in your garage to prevent air flow, which can fuel possible fires and spread them quickly from the garage to your home. This can significantly reduce your escape time. Penetrations allow insects and other small animals quick access into your garage and home, and may also be responsible for higher heating bills because of the air infiltration.

Instructions

  Put on gloves, safety glasses and a long-sleeved shirt. Place a dropcloth below the work area to catch any drips.

  Screw the dispensing top onto the top of the spray foam can.

  Place the nozzle up the opening where the electrical penetrations pass through the wall. Squeeze the trigger gently to allow the spray foam to dispense into the opening.

  Move the nozzle slowly around the opening as the foam dispenses, filling the entire void with foam.

  Release the trigger and wipe up any excess foam with a rag. Allow the product to fully cure for the recommended time on the can before disturbing or working with the wiring that passes through the opening.
