How to Dig Under a Concrete Slab for Electrical Lines

If you must install electrical lines under a concrete slab or driveway, you will not need to rip up a section of the driveway to bury the lines underground. However, with common hand tools and a little creativity, you can "drill" a tunnel under the driveway to install the electrical lines. This project can be a little labor intensive, but likely will save money down the road.

Things You'll Need

  • Shovel
  • Tape measure
  • PVC pipe
  • Miter saw
  • Sledge hammer
  • Long stick or smaller diameter pipe

Instructions

    • 1

Dig a small trench on each side of the concrete slab. The trench should be approximately 1 foot wide, a few feet long and deep enough so that you are under the paved surface of the slab. Ensure the trenches are directly across from each other.

    • 2

Measure the width of the concrete slab. Cut your PVC pipe a few feet longer than the measured width. Place the PVC pipe in your miter saw and cut one end at a 45-degree angle.

    • 3

Push the end of the PVC pipe with the angled tip up against the soil in one of the trenches. Aim it so it faces directly at the other trench on the other side of the slab.

    • 4

Tap the other end of the PVC pipe with your sledge hammer. The angled end should begin to "drill" into the soil.

    • 5

Twist and pull the pipe out after hammering it in several inches. Use a long stick or smaller diameter pipe to push out the soil within the PVC pipe.

    • 6

Place the PVC pipe back in the hole and tap it in several more feet. Remove it once again and push out the soil. Continue this process until the pipe emerges at the other side of the slab.

    • 7

Remove the pipe from the "drilled" hole and install your electrical lines.
