How to Install a Wiremold Metal Raceway

An electrical raceway typically refers to a surface-mounted channel designed to contain electrical wires or cables that run from one point to another. Raceways are commonly made of either plastic or metal by various manufacturers such as Wiremold. Raceways are usually sold in different colors but can be painted according to your taste. Using a raceway to run wires and electrical cables can save you money by minimizing time, labor and materials.

Instructions

    • 1

Map the path that the wire will take from start to end and draw a line along the path using a pencil. Draw the path in straight lines only, and always use a 90-degree angle when turning vertically or horizontally on a flat surface. Check the horizontal and vertical alignment of the lines using a level.

Mount a Wiremold electrical outlet box on the spot where you'll place an outlet or a switch, using screws supplied with the outlet box. Mount either an outer or inner elbow along the line on each wall corner where the wire has to turn. Mount a flat elbow on each point where the wire has to make a 90-degree turn along a flat surface. Mount a T-fitting if the cable needs to branch out to another direction.

Measure the length of raceway that you need to install between each fitting with a tape measure, but allow an extra 1/2 inch in length to overlap the raceway over each fitting. Cut the raceway to size using a hacksaw. File any rough or sharp edges at the tip of the raceway with a metal file. Unsnap the top cover of the raceway, then peel off the cover of its adhesive backing. Plug the tip of the raceway onto each fitting, then stick the raceway onto the wall following the line that you drew.

Place the electrical cable along the channel behind the cover and snap the cover onto the raceway bracket. Follow the same procedures for all the raceways that you need to install. Proceed with completing your wiring once all the raceways are installed.
