How to Install Tamper-Resistant Receptacles

In the United States, about 2,400 children are treated every year from injuries sustained by inserting objects into electrical outlets. This can be prevented with the installation of tamper-resistant receptacles because it prevents objects from being inserted into electrical outlets. This style of outlet is installed in place of your existing receptacle and is wired the same way.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the power for the circuit you are working on at the home's distribution panel. Confirm the power is off by touching a non-contact voltage detector to the wire's insulation.

    • 2

Remove the screw that secures the faceplate to the outlet. Remove the two screws that secure the outlet to the electrical box.

    • 3

Pull the outlet from the wall and loosen the two terminals with the wires attached. Pull the wires from the outlet.

    • 4

Loosen the brass and silver terminals on the tamper-resistant receptacle. Wrap the black wire around the brass terminal and tighten it down. Wrap the white wire around the silver terminal and tighten it down.

    • 5

Push the outlet into the electrical box and secure with the two removed screws. Install the faceplate back on the outside.
