How to Replace an Analog Voltage Panel Meter

Find the power supply that feeds electricity to the voltage meter and disconnect the power. Unscrew and disconnect the clamps of the vehicle if the meter is used in a vehicle. Unplug the power cord if the meter is attached to an electronic device. Unplug the machine if the meter is mounted on a machinery panel.

Unscrew or pry up the voltage meter, then remove it from the panel. Most voltage meters are installed onto a panel in a manner that would allow it to be easily removed for servicing. Look behind the panel to see if there are screws that need to be removed. If there are no screws, press the spring clips along the sides of the meter, then push the meter outward.

Lift the meter carefully out of the panel and note how the two wires are connected to the two terminals on each side of the meter. Unplug or unscrew the wires if the connectors are solder-less. Cut the wires if they are soldered, then strip off 1/2 inch from the tip of each cut wire with a wire stripper. Remove the voltage meter.

Hold an identical analog voltage meter and connect each wire to each terminal screw following the configuration you noted in Step 3. Plug the wire connectors, or screw the wires onto the terminals behind the voltage meter if the connections are solder-less. Solder each wire if soldering is required to connect each wire to each terminal -- using a soldering gun.

Plug the analog voltage meter into the opening on the panel board. Push the meter until it fits snugly into the opening, then replace the screws if there are any. Plug the appliance to its power source. Turn on the appliance or machine to see if the meter is working.
