How to Update an Old Breaker Box

Electrical components are designed to last a lifetime. If you are having problems with your electrical breaker box, it is most likely in the breaker switches themselves. By replacing your old breakers with new, you replace all of the moving parts in your box to update your service to work more efficiently at minimum cost. This repair can be made without pulling a permit, or hiring a licensed electrical contractor. Be sure to follow safety protocol to reduce the likelihood of electrical shock.

Instructions

Turn off the main power to the box. Look for a small, separate panel connected to the main breaker box with a thick electrical cable. Pull the lever on the side of the panel to the down position to disconnect and try a few lights throughout the house to ensure it has been disconnected. If you are unsure of this step, do not proceed without advice from a professional.

Open the circuit breaker box and remove the screws from the metal cover over the wiring. Lift the cover from the box to expose the wiring and connections at the ends of the breakers.

    • 3

Pry the top breaker from the box, starting with the outside end of the breaker. Pull out on the breaker to disconnect it. Release the screws at either end and pull the wires free.

Replace the breaker with a new breaker of the same amperage and type. Fit the wires into the connectors and tighten the screws with a screwdriver. Fit the breaker back into the box, in the same position as the original. Replace each breaker with a new breaker switch. Up the amperage on any circuits that have problems with tripping breakers frequently. The maximum for household circuits is 20 amps.

Fit the cover panel back in place once all breakers are replaced and replace the screws to hold it in place, covering the wiring. Restore the main power and test your electrical circuits to ensure they are working properly.
