How to Make a Hidden Light Connection

In residential wiring, lighting is connected using essentially the same technique regardless of whether the fixture is visible or concealed, as in the case of up lights behind a column, or above a crown molding. The three wires are typically connected to the light fixture in the form of short color-coded leads that extend off of the fixture. All spliced connections, such as those made with wire nuts, must be contained inside an approved junction box, which may be integrated into the fixture.

Turn off the breaker connected to the circuit in question. Test the end of the wire by putting one probe of a volt meter on the red wire and one on the black. If it lights, the circuit is not dead. Continue testing by turning off breakers until the tester no longer lights.

    • 2

Remove any covers from the junction box or the back of the fixture to expose the wiring with a screw driver. Pull all wires out to the extent of their length to make them as easy as possible to work with. Look for three wires on the wall cable and three on the light -- one red or black, one white and one green.

Inspect the light to determine how the connection will be made. If the wires from the light end in their own junction box, then the connection will be made there. If the wires extend normally off of the fixture, the connection will be made in a junction box inside the wall, ceiling, or other mounting face.

Strip the ends of the wire leads on your light. Fit each wire into the appropriately sized hole in the jaws of your wire stripping pliers. Close the pliers onto the wire and pull toward the end of the wire to remove the insulation from the last inch of each wire.

Fit a wire nut onto each color coordinated pair of wires, one from the wall, one from the fixture, and twist them clockwise to lock the wires together. Tuck your wiring into the box and replace any covers, tightening the screws clockwise. Fit the light back in place, if needed.

Restore the power and test the light. Turn off the power and check all connections for problems. Restore the power and test again. If issues persist, consult a professional before returning the light to regular use.
