Instructions

    • 1

Locate the circuit that controls power to the circuit you will be working on. Flip the circuit breaker switch to its "Off" position. Turn on the light switch that controls the light fixture you will install to test the wires for power.

    • 2

Pull the electrical cable out of the ceiling light outlet box. Set the dial of your multimeter to the 120 volts AC range. Hold a probe in each hand and touch the tip of one probe against the copper tip of the black wire (hot). Touch the tip of the other probe against the copper tip of the white wire (neutral) and then view your multimeter. No reading indicates there is no more power in the circuit.

    • 3

Use diagonal pliers to strip off four inches of cable sheathing from the end of the cable to reveal the inner wires. Remove 1/2 inch of wire insulation from the tip of the black, green and white wires with a wire stripper. Wrap the green, bare wire around the grounding screw embedded in the outlet box.

    • 4

Wrap the black wire clockwise around one of the two terminal screws on the Cooper light fixture and wrap the white wire around the other terminal screw. Tighten each screw with a screwdriver and make sure there are no loose connections.

    • 5

Strip 1/2 inch from both ends of an 8-inch green grounding wire and then screw one end of the wire onto the grounding screw on the light fixture. Screw the other end of the green grounding wire onto the grounding screw on the outlet box. Tighten all screws to secure each connection.

    • 6

Tuck all wires neatly into the outlet box. Mount the Cooper light fixture over the ceiling light outlet box according to the manufacturer's instructions. Turn on the main circuit breaker and then turn on the 120-volt circuit breaker controlling the light circuit.
