Why Is My Electrical Box Making Noises?

Electricity within our homes is an often-overlooked convenience we use on a constant basis that if not maintained can malfunction, causing serious damage and injuries. The electrical system within a residence provides regulated electrical service to a serious of circuits from the main electrical box or panel. Any noise or sounds coming from the service panel or box indicates a malfunction you must correct immediately.
  1. Inspection

    • Perform an inspection of the area where you hear the noise to verify that the actual electrical box or outlet is making the noise. Transformers near residences make a loud buzzing noise often mistaken for the service panel or outlets within a residence. Vibrations in the walls caused by appliances such as a refrigerator, washer, dryer or air conditioner often cause a low buzzing sound similar to an electrical problem. If you're unsure of the origin of the sound, perform a full inspection of electrical components in the area.

    Breaker Box

    • Investigate noises coming from the electrical box or service panel immediately. With the power shut off, remove the individual breakers and inspect the contacts for burn marks resulting from improper contact with the panel. This improper connection causes a low-pitched buzzing as well as a clicking noise in some instances. Remove the panel cover entirely to inspect the internal wiring for loose connections or signs of arcing. Tighten all connections with an approved insulated screwdriver.

    Electrical Outlet

    • Electrical outlets sometime make noises due to wires connected insufficiently within the outlet junction box. With the power shut off, remove the outlet plate and unscrew the outlet from the box. Inspect any wires with connections for black areas, which indicate arcing and heat. Secure all wire connections with an approved wire nut, and wrap them with electrical tape to ensure a tight connection. You must cover all bare wires with electrical tape to prevent them from touching other wires or metal objects, causing a short.

    Warning

    • Do not attempt to service your electrical panel if you do not have the proper electrical training. When working on the service panel, turn off the main power switch, which disconnects power to the entire panel. Turn off the designated breaker to service electrical outlets, and run a test by plugging in an electrical device known to work. If you see smoke or electrical sparks coming from an electrical box, do not attempt to shut off the power; call the fire department and leave the building.
