How to Check for Leakage in a DC Circuit

DC (Direct Current) is the dominant power source for most telecommunications devices. This includes many cellular phones, which are powered by a DC charging cable. If you think your DC device may be faulty or losing power, it could likely be a leak or short in the power source. To find out for sure, you can use a multimeter to test the DC device.

Things You'll Need

  • Multimeter (digital or analog)

Instructions

    • 1

Turn on your multimeter via the "Power" button on the front of the unit.

    • 2

Insert the red lead cable that comes included with the multimeter into the circular port marked "+" on the front of the unit.

    • 3

Insert the black lead cable into the port marked "-" on the front of the unit.

    • 4

Switch the dial on the front of the multimeter so that it is set to "DC V." That means it will read DC voltage.

    • 5

Plug in your DC power unit or turn it on. Locate the circuit you intend to test.

    • 6

Touch the black lead to a non electrified area to ground the multimeter.

    • 7

Touch the red lead to the circuit and hold it there. The multimeter will then produce a reading. If the reading is less than the amount of volts the unit is supposed to produce then you likely have a leak in the circuit.
