How to Insert Flush Trims

When recessed lighting is installed in the ceiling of your home, a ring is typically inserted into a hole in the ceiling. A flush trim ring is used to secure the outside cover of the light to the ceiling. You can do this by first determining where each of the lighting canisters will be located in the ceiling. The flush trim needs to be installed before you can install the canister for the recessed lighting.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine where the canister for the recessed light is located in the ceiling. Mark the drywall using the pencil. Repeat this step at the location for additional recessed light canisters.

    • 2

Puncture the drywall on the mark with a sharp object or the tip of a screwdriver.

    • 3

Cut a hole into the drywall that is the diameter of the canister with the drywall knife. This will be used as the opening for the flush trim.

    • 4

Insert the flush trim ring into the hole and thread it into place against the ceiling. Insert a screw into the hole in the flush trim ring and tighten with the Allen wrench.
