How to Run PVC Horizontally in Concrete

Conduit is installed in concrete so that electrical wires can be run through the floor. PVC conduit is commonly used for this application because it resists the corrosion of the cement, is strong, water-tight and inexpensive. When installing conduit in a permanent location like concrete, it is always wise to use conduit one size larger than you need. This accommodates for future expansion of the electrical system.

Things You'll Need

  • PVC conduit
  • Conduit spacers
  • Five-piece compression fitting

Instructions

    • 1

Choose the start of the conduit run and the end. Lay the conduit on the compacted gravel base between these two points. If you are laying multiple PVC conduit lines, lay them side by side with several inches of space in between.

    • 2

Join two sections of conduit with a five-piece compression ring if one section is not long enough. This is done by inserting a gland nut and compression ring over the end of each section of pipe. Insert each pipe into the body of the fitting and tighten the gland nut on each end.

    • 3

Prop the PVC conduit off the ground, 2 inches to 3 inches, with conduit spacers. The conduit spacer is placed on the ground with the conduit positioned in its top groove. These should be spaced so that the conduit maintains an even distance from the ground on its entire run.

Pour the concrete around the conduit, being careful not to knock it off its spacers.
