How to Install a CH2150 Cutler-Hammer Breaker

Cutler-Hammer is the brand name of a manufacturer of electrical breakers. A CH2150 is a 150-amp, 240-volt breaker that supplies large appliances, or power for subpanels. This type of breaker is best installed by a professional electrician due to the amount of power that runs through the associated circuit; if you are at all unsure of how to completely disconnect the power to the breaker panel, consult a professional before proceeding, as the procedure is simple but the danger can be great. The installation process is similar to installing standard household circuits.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the main power supply to the breaker panel and turn it off. Look for a separate, smaller panel with a disconnect switch on its side; pull this switch to the "down" position and test lights throughout the structure to ensure that it has been disconnected. Check the meter; the usage dial should be at a standstill, if not, contact the power company for a disconnect.

    • 2

Open the breaker box and use a screwdriver to remove the screws from the corners of the access panel; lift the cover off of the box. Pry the metal tabs covering two consecutive bays off with the screwdriver. Locate the wires from your 240-volt circuit where they have been pulled into the back of the breaker box. They are probably the only loose wires; if not, they will be the largest wires you can see.

Remove the outside insulation by peeling it back a few inches (if it has not been already) using a utility knife. Strip each of the three wires 1 inch from its end with wire strippers. Feed the green ground wire over to the ground block, which is usually in one corner of the box. Look for a row of green wires; feed the wire into an empty hole and tighten the screw nearest it to lock it in place.

Fit the black and white wires into the two contacts on the front end of the breaker and tighten the screws. Fit the breaker onto the vertical rod in the box, similar to the way in which the other breakers are fitted, inside end first, then press down on the outside end to snap it into place.

Replace the cover back on the breaker box and reinstall the screws. Restore the power and test the circuit. If problems occur, turn off the power, check all connections and test it again. If problems persist, turn off the new breaker and consult a professional.
