How to Purge An Electrical Box

Electricity is delivered to a building through three main wires from the utility. These conductors are fed into an electrical box which then distributes the power to the individual circuits in the home. When working inside a distribution panel it is important to purge the electricity from the box first. This reduces the chances of being electrocuted by contact with live wires. Since electrical boxes have no method of storing electricity, purging one is done by turning off the supply upstream.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the main breaker for the electrical panel. In a combination panel this is the large switch at the top of the box. In a separated system the service box is upstream of the distribution panel.

    • 2

Open the main breaker so that it is in the "Off" position. This is done by flipping the switch with your hand.

    • 3

Touch a non-contact voltage detector to several wire's insulation to confirm that electricity is purged from the box.

    • 4

Double check the power is off by checking if any appliances or lights have power in the building.
