How to Connect an Australian RCD Circuit Breaker

In Australia, RCD (Residual Current Device) breakers are called "safety switches." This is because an RD breaker is designed to shut down electricity in the event of an imbalance of electricity between the two conductors on the circuit. If there is an imbalance in the electricity while someone is working on the circuit, it can cause a lethal shock. That's why it's important to add an RCD breaker to your home circuit system.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase an RCD breaker that matches the electrical panel configuration in your home.

    • 2

Make sure the breaker switch is in the off position. Also make sure the electrical panel is turned off.

    • 3

Insert the white circuit wire into the circular hole at the bottom of the RCD breaker marked "Neutral." Attach the black electrical wire to the remaining hole in the breaker.

    • 4

Insert the connector end of the breaker into an available bus in the attachment bar in the panel.

    • 5

Use your screwdriver to loosen one of the screws to the side of the circuit breaker.

    • 6

Place the black wire over the screw holes and tighten the screw so that it secures the wire that connects to the breaker.

    • 7

Loosen another screw above or below the one you just loosened and repeat Step 6 to secure the white wire.

    • 8

Turn on the power to the panel as well as the power to the breaker.
