A DIY DMX Dimmer

DMX dimmers are used by DJs and theatrical lighting technicians for controlling and dimming lights that are plugged into the unit. Each light is plugged into a channel, which can be individually controlled. For large applications that use numerous lights, it is recommended that you use a professional unit, but if you are only planning to use a few lights, you can build your own dimming board using simple electrical components available at most hardware stores.

Things You'll Need

  • 2 dimmer switch face plates

Instructions

    • 1

Trace the opening of the plastic electrical boxes on the plywood with a pencil. Center the four boxes with two above and two below, with a few inches between each box.

    • 2

Drill a starter hole inside the traced opening with a drill, then use a jigsaw to cut a hole for each box in the plywood. Insert the boxes into the holes and tighten the screws to secure them in place.

    • 3

Cut the female end of each heavy-duty extension cord off with the wire strippers and feed the cut end of one cord through each of the lower two boxes. Strip the last 2 inches of each of the three individual wires inside the large cord with the wire strippers.

    • 4

Connect the white, black and green wires of each extension cord to the corresponding input terminals of the two dimmer switches, one for each lower box. Tighten the screws with a screwdriver.

    • 5

Cut two pieces of Romex cable to a length of 2 feet each. Separate the individual cables inside at both ends and strip the last 2 inches of each end of both cables.

    • 6

Connect the white, black and green wires of the Romex cables to the corresponding output terminals of the two dimmer switches, one for each lower box. Tighten the terminals with a screwdriver.

    • 7

Feed the other end of each Romex cable through the box directly above the lower box, then connect the cables to the input terminals on the outlet sockets, one for each upper box. Tighten the terminals with a screwdriver.

    • 8

Push the wiring into the boxes and mount the two outlets and the two dimmer switches to the plastic boxes and secure them with the included screws. Put the face plates on all four components and secure them with the included screws.

    • 9

Plug the two extension cords into a wall outlet, then plug the lights you intend to dim into the outlet sockets at the top of your lighting board. The dimmer switches will control the outlets directly above them.
