How to Connect a 208 WYE Light

Lighting systems vary in both size and complexity depending on what they are used for. A 208-volt WYE light is used in locations which require a very large amount of light. Large commercial and industrial buildings and large venues such as a stadium or concert hall can use this type of lighting. This type of light operates on three-phase power. Each lighting element is connected to one phase of the 208 WYE power supply. Connecting a 208 WYE light can be dangerous. Be sure all power is off before attempting any connections.

Instructions

Shut off the three-phase power at the main power panel. Locate the junction box that will power the light. Open the box and locate the neutral wire. It is usually a white wire. Connect that wire to the white wire of the light. You may have to strip 1/2 inch of insulation off of the light's neutral wire to make this connection if the manufacturer did not already do so.

Locate the remaining light wires. There should be three wires remaining. Each wire should connect to a different phase of the three-phase power. Typically these wires are color coded to aid in connection. The colors are usually black, red and blue.

Connect the black wire of the light to the black wire at the junction box. Repeat this for each of the remaining wires, matching color for color until all three phases are wired. Some lights have a ground wire. If this one has a ground wire, connect it to the ground in the junction box. Turn the power back on and test the light.
