220 Volt Generator Outlet Installation

A generator is a handy tool in the event of a power outage. Prolonged outages are costly as the food in your freezer and fridge spoil. If the outage is during winter months, it may leave your home without heat. Wiring a 220 volt generator outlet is the same as any outlet. This type of circuit has two hot connections, one neutral wire and a ground connection for safety.

Instructions

    • 1

Pull the spark plug wire off the generator's plugs to disable the motor.

    • 2

Find a location to secure the electrical box to the generator's frame. This is ideally in a location where a outlet is conveniently placed, and the metal frame can properly support the electrical box.

    • 3

Hold the electrical box against the frame and secure with at least two self taping screws and a drill.

    • 4

Feed the generator's 220 volt wiring into the side of the electrical box and secure by tightening the wire compression mechanism.

    • 5

Strip 3/8 inches of insulation off the four wires in the 220 volt wiring. Loosen the four terminal screws in the outlet.

    • 6

Push the red and black wire into the two brass (commonly outside) terminals and tighten them down.

    • 7

Insert the white wire into the silver terminal and tighten it down. Insert the green or bare wire into the green ground terminal and tighten it down.

    • 8

Push the wiring into the electrical box and secure the outlet to the box with the screws provided. Install the cover on the outlet with a screwdriver.
