How to Change a Squared Circuit

Changing a Square D circuit breaker is not a difficult job, but great care must be taken to prevent electrical shock. The Square D is a common brand of circuit breaker that is bolted to the breaker box panel on the outer edge of the switch. The circuit switch is fastened to the panel not only with the bolt, but also by sliding the switch onto a flat bar in the back of the panel to ground the circuit. Replacing the Square D circuit can be done in less than an hour with some basic tools.

Instructions

    • 1

Shut off all the branch circuit breakers before attempting to change the square D circuit at the breaker box. Turn off the main breaker switch and unfasten the screws that are holding the cover panel onto the breaker box with a screwdriver.

    • 2

Identify the circuit that needs to be changed and loosen the screw holding the electrical wire onto the circuit switch with a screwdriver. Remove the electrical wire from the switch and move it out of the way.

    • 3

Remove the bolt on the outer edge of the circuit switch with a nut driver and pry the circuit away from the center of the breaker box carefully with a screwdriver. Take the circuit switch out of the breaker box and discard the part.

    • 4

Slide the new circuit switch onto the breaker box panel and fasten it to the panel with the bolt. Attach the electrical wire to the new switch by tightening the screw on the electrical wire.

    • 5

Place the cover panel onto the breaker box and secure it with screws. Turn the main breaker switch on and turn on all the branch circuit breakers.
