How to Change the Pendulum in a Seth Thomas Clock

Seth Thomas started making clocks in 1807. Many of his signature mantel and shelf clocks remain in circulation today. Pendulums in a Seth Thomas clock regulate the speed of the clock and can be found in the front, under the clock face and in front of the weights. Damaged pendulums will affect the clock's mechanism and will not keep time accurately. Pendulums are easy to replace once you have sourced the parts. Antique dealers and online suppliers will typically supply the pendulum that suits your Seth Thomas.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a pendulum that is the same size as the existing one. Open the front door of the clock. The door is held in place with a clasp or handle.

Carefully lift the old pendulum from the hook and remove. Hang the new pendulum on the hook from the loop at the top. Ensure the shiny side of the pendulum is facing the outside of the clock.

    • 3

Tap the side of the pendulum to set it in motion. Check that it swings at the same rate as the old one. Adjust the pendulum nut if necessary. Close the glass front.
