How to Install Double Black Wire

Local and national electrical codes in the U.S. require electrical wires to be color-coded. Black is the color used to represent main power lines in a circuit, white wires represent neutral lines and green/bare wires are used to ground a circuit. Black wires provide the path for 120-volt AC current. White wires allow a return path to complete the circuit and green/bare wires route any stray current back to the earth. The two large power wires that run from the service drop above your roof to the electrical meter, and from the electrical meter to the electrical panel are both colored black.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Slip the two black power wires (hot) through the opening on top of the riser pipe mounted above of the meter box. Drop the wires down into the meter box below. Have an assistant pull the wires from inside the meter box, but leave 11/2 feet of wire hanging from the tip of the pipe.

    • 2

Drop a segment of white wire (neutral) from the top of the pipe down to the meter box, but leave 11/2 feet of extra wire on top of the pipe. Slip all wires through a weatherhead and plug the weatherhead onto the top of the pipe.

    • 3

Slip the two black wires running from the electrical panel through the opening at the base of the meter box. Run the white wire (neutral) from the electrical panel into the meter box via the opening at the base of the box. Strip off 1 inch of plastic insulation from the tip of each of the six wires (4 black and 2 white) inside the meter box, using a utility knife.

    • 4

Plug each wire to its corresponding terminal lug in the following configuration: all wires running from the top of the meter box plug to lugs in the top half of the meter box and all wires running from the bottom of the meter box plug to lugs in the lower half of the meter box. Each black wire (hot) plugs into each outer terminal lug (in any order) in the lower and upper halves of the meter box.

    • 5

Plug each white wire into the middle terminal lug in the lower and upper halves of the meter box. Tighten all lugs securely, using an Allen wrench. Proceed with the rest of your household wiring, then contact your local electrical inspector to have the wiring inspected.
