How to Thread a Plastic-Coated Robroy Conduit

Robroy Industries produces a plastic-coated conduit under the brand name Plasti-Bond RedHot. Conduit is used to protect electrical wires that are run outside wall systems from mechanical damage. This specific type of conduit is coated in plastic to provide a second layer of protection against corrosion. It is ideal for locations where exposure to corrosion is high such as industrial and marine applications. Threading plastic-coated conduit requires a special process to assure the plastic doesn't jam the pipe threader.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the last 1/4 inch of plastic coating off the end of the pipe with a utility knife. The plastic is removed by using a motion similar to sharpening a pencil with a knife.

    • 2

Slide the pipe thread protector cap over the end of the pipe. Use the end of the cap as a guide to cut the plastic coating around the pipe with a utility knife.

    • 3

Make longitudinal cuts from the outside circumference cut to the end of the pipe every 1/4 inch. This allows the plastic to break off in small sections when threading to reduce the chances of it jamming the threader.

Insert the pipe in the pipe threader and secure it by tightening the compression mechanism. Start the pipe threader and guide the conduit into the threading dye.
