How to Adjust a Garage Sensor

Garage door openers operate on infrared sensors. These sensors are placed near the garage floor and are affixed close to either side of the door, usually by the railing system. The safety beam detects motion or obstructions, which may cause the door to open then not close. Over the course of time, the sensors can be slightly moved or jarred, disrupting the safety beam's ability to stream from sensor to sensor. When this occurs, the door opener will not operate properly.

Instructions

    • 1

Clear all items stored near each sensor away. Nothing should lean against either sensor.

    • 2

Check the wiring running from each sensor to the garage door opener. Look for breaks in the wires. In addition, make sure the door opener is plugged into an electrical outlet.

    • 3

Clean the lens on each sensor thoroughly with an alcohol swab, removing any grime or dirt that may obstruct the lens.

    • 4

Loosen the retaining screws that hold each sensor to its mounting bracket with a screwdriver or a pair of pliers.

    • 5

Point the sensors directly at one another. Green lights will illuminate on each sensor when properly adjusted. You will be able to tell when the garage sensors are not properly adjusted by two red lights appearing on both sensors.

    • 6

Tighten the retaining screws with a screwdriver once both sensors have green glowing lights. Test the garage sensors by opening and closing the door with the remote or the wall-mounted control panel.
