How to Change the Door Bell Button

When a doorbell button is pressed, the button completes the bell circuit within the building, and the householder or building owner is alerted to come to the door. Over time, doorbell buttons that are exposed to the elements will eventually wear out or fail. Since these buttons are simple push-button switches, a doorbell button may be replaced quickly by using simple hand tools.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the mounting screws that hold the doorbell button in place. Since some doorbells contain an external housing that covers these screws, you may have to use the screwdriver to pry the housing from the doorbell button frame to expose these screws.

    • 2

Loosen the electrical terminal screws to remove the wires from the doorbell button. Remove the first wire from the first terminal screw. Cover the exposed metal part of the wire with a piece of electrical tape.

    • 3
Vinyl electric tape will prevent an inadvertent short-circuit.

Remove the second wire from the second terminal screw. Cover the exposed metal part of the wire with a piece of electrical tape.

    • 4

Remove the mounting screws from the doorbell button frame. Remove the old doorbell button from the wall.

    • 5

Install the replacement doorbell button where the old doorbell button was. Insert the mounting screws into the screw holes on the new doorbell button and anchor the doorbell button to the wall.

    • 6

Remove the electrical tape from the first wire. Loosen the first terminal screw and place the first wire under the terminal screw head. Tighten the terminal screw so that it holds the wire snugly against the doorbell button electrical terminal.

    • 7

Remove the electrical tape from the second wire. Loosen the second terminal screw and place the second wire under the terminal screw head. Tighten the terminal screw so that it holds the wire snugly against the doorbell button electrical terminal.

    • 8

Press the doorbell button to verify that the doorbell works. If necessary, install the housing cover for the new doorbell button to cover the electrical connections.
