How to Install a Data Jack

Connecting devices in your home to your network via Ethernet is a task that commonly requires yards of cable run across the floor or along the wall. To avoid the hazards and unsightliness accompanying long runs of wire, an Ethernet data jack can be installed in each desired room to make use of cabling run through the wall.

Things You'll Need

  • Wire stripper
  • RJ-45 Ethernet jack
  • RJ-45 punch-down tool
  • Flat-tip screwdriver

Instructions

    • 1

Strip two inches of the outer sheath of the Ethernet cable exiting the wall, being careful not to strip or puncture the small inner wires.

    • 2

Untwist the paired wires to the base of the outer sheath, then line the data jack up to the Ethernet cable so the wires are entering the jack and the end of the outer sheath is aligned with the back of the jack.

    • 3

Place the wires into the matching color slots based on the A or B standard. Ensure both sides of the cable are wired according to the same standard.

    • 4

Slide the tip of the punch-down tool into each slot and push downward to puncture the wires and form a connection.

    • 5

Cut the excess wires off at the sides of the jack.

    • 6

Push the jack into the slot of the data jack faceplate if it is not already attached, then screw the faceplate onto the low-voltage or receptacle box in the wall.
