How to Measure Power Levels in Modern Communications Systems

Modern communications systems rely on electricity to move their signals around the world. These devices typical run on lower voltages than a common household circuit. Measuring the power level in the wires is done with a multimeter. The important measurements to determine are the voltage (V) and the amperes, or amps (Ω). The voltage is the amount of electrical force in the circuit, and the amps are the amount of electricity flowing through the wires.

Instructions

    • 1

Connect the alligator clip of the multimeter's black wire to the ground connection on the telecommunications equipment. The clip needs to be attached to bare wire to read the power.

    • 2

Connect the alligator clip of the multimeter's red wire to the positive connection on the telecommunications equipment.

    • 3

Turn the multimeter on by rotating its switch to the "Ω" symbol. Record the amps in the circuit from the multimeter screen.

    • 4

Rotate the meter's switch to the "V" symbol. Record the volts in the circuit from the multimeter screen.
