When troubleshooting issues with appliances, one of the first steps is checking if an outlet is providing electricity. You can plug another device into the outlet but some appliances require more electricity than others. To determine the exact output of an outlet, you need to use a multimeter, a handheld device that gives you a reading.

Set the dial on the multimeter to the AC voltage setting. The mark for AC will appear as VAC, AC V or a V beneath a wavy line.

Hold the insulated parts of the multimeter probes. Insert one probe into each of the outlet holes.

Read the voltage output from the outlet on the multimeter. The reading should be between 108 and 121 volts.
