How to Check a Dryer Outlet

If your electric dryer quits working or doesn't heat up properly, one of the possible causes could be a voltage problem at the dryer's wall outlet. Dryers are designed to operate at a voltage of between 220 and 240 volts AC. By checking the voltage of your outlet with a multimeter, you may be able to get a handle on the problem before you call in an appliance repairman or an electrician.

Instructions

    • 1

Plug the red and black probes into your multimeter. Set the multimeter to AC, in the voltage range that covers the voltages between 220 and 240 volts. There are many different brands and makes of multimeters — check the manual for your device if you're uncertain about how to do this. Turn the multimeter on.

    • 2

Insert the red probe into the upper right angled slot in the outlet, and the black probe into the upper left angled slot. Check the reading — it should fall in the 220- to 240-volt range. Take out the probes.

    • 3

Set the multimeter to detect voltage in the 110- to 120-volt range. Insert the red probe into the upper right angled slot and the black probe into the lower center slot. Check for a reading in the 110- to 120-volt range. Remove the probes.
