How to Fix a Severed Wire to Outdoor Landscape Lights

Low voltage landscape lighting adds accents around the home. The thin wire that powers the lights is normally buried underground but is often exposed where it goes into the ground from the transformer and comes up again for each individual light. The wire may be accidentally cut while using a string trimmer or other cutting instrument. Splicing it together only takes a few minutes.

  • Direct burial splicing kit

Instructions

    • 1

      Unplug the landscape lights.

    • 2

Peel back 1 inch of the outer insulation on both sides of the severed wire with a utility knife, carefully exposing the two wires inside.

    • 3

Strip 1/2 inch of the insulation away from the two inside wires in each of the sides, exposing the metal wire inside.

    • 4

Twist the severed wires together to form a complete circuit. With low voltage wiring it doesn't matter which wire is joined to which.

    • 5

Wrap the splicing kit around the splice and snap it together. The splice is now protected against moisture and dirt.
