How to Install a Commercial Meter Loop

Commercial meter loops are traditionally used in commercial buildings where permanent electrical service is going to be delivered. If you're uncomfortable working with electrical infrastructure, it's best to consult a professional before you begin the installation. However, for those with experience, you may find the installation easier. While the tools and techniques differ specifically with each installation, the fundamentals of the installation remain the same.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the weather cap at the top of the meter to protect it from nature's elements. Ensure the drip loop is placed at least 6 inches away from the weather cap.

    • 2

Run the service raceway to the meter base, which should already be secured to the wall of the building.

    • 3

Install the weatherproof-fused breaker protector panel below the meter base to protect the electrical circuit breakers from water and moisture penetration.

    • 4

Run a copper grounding wire from the circuit breakers into the ground by attaching it to an 8-foot copper rod that is driven into the ground.
