How to Strip a High Voltage Box

Removing and replacing a high voltage breaker box requires the disassembly or stripping of parts and wiring installed into the box. As long as you take the necessary safety precautions, stripping a high voltage box is straightforward and will only take a short amount of time to complete. Once you remove the breakers from the box, you can use them in the new box. This is a good way to help save money.

Instructions

    • 1

Contact your electric company and schedule an appointment to have service personnel disconnect the electrical connection between the electrical transformer and the breaker box. Unless you are a licensed electrician, this is not something you can do yourself.

    • 2

Remove the screws that secure the cover to the breaker box and place the cover off to the side.

    • 3

Turn off all of the breakers including the main breaker.

    • 4

Loosen all of the terminal screws that secure the black wires to the breakers with a screwdriver and then pull the black wires off the screws.

    • 5

Push the tip of the screwdriver into the release slots for the breakers and then pull the breakers out of the breaker box. Some older breakers secure to the buss bar with a screw. If this is the case, remove the screws and then pull the breakers out of the box.

Loosen all of the terminal screws that secure the white wires to the neutral buss bar and then pull the white wires off the neutral buss bar.

Pull all of the wires out of the holes in the side of the breaker box.

    • 9

Locate the large black wire connecting to the breaker buss bar and remove the screws that hold the retaining clamp in place. Pull the black wire up and out of the breaker box.

Locate the large white wire connecting to the neutral buss bar and remove the screws that hold the retaining clamp in place. Pull the white wire up and out of the breaker box.
