Broken Plug Prong on a Snow Blower

Both electric and gas snowblowers can have electric cords. Electric models use the cord for receiving power, while some gasoline models have an electric starter and the cord is removed before blowing snow. If any of the three prongs on the cord’s male plug breaks, removing and replacing it is easy.

Things You'll Need

  • Electrician’s pliers
  • Replacement three-prong plug rated for the same load as the original cord.
  • Sharp knife
  • Screwdriver

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the cord in two with electrician’s pliers about one-half inch below the plug. Take the plug to a hardware store and ask for a replacement that matches the cord’s load. Ask for a replacement plug that is color-coded inside ensuring you make the right connections.

    • 2

Peel the outer insulation back from the cord about one-half inch, and then cut off any excess insulation. This exposes the three wires inside. Make a shallow cut in the insulation of each wire with a knife or electrician’s pliers and peel off the insulation exposing a little more than one-quarter inch of copper wire.

    • 3

Unscrew or unsnap the replacement plug and set the top to the side. The side with the connectors is the one with which you work.

    • 4

Connect the cord’s colored wires to the matching color connections inside the plug. Some plugs come with screw-in connectors where the wire is wrapped around the loose screw, and then the screw is tightened, holding the wire in place. Some connectors require you place the wire in a hole, and the connector is pressed down, holding it in place. Double check after the wires are installed making sure the connections are not loose, and that the bare wire touches only their connectors.

Snap or screw the top onto the new plug. Ensure it works by testing it.
