How to Install a Dryer Outlet Gang Box

The average size of a 30-amp, 240-volt dryer outlet measures about 1/2 inch deep, 3 3/4 inches high and 2 1/2 inches wide. The average single-gang electrical switch box measures about the same size. Because of the size of the outlet and the size of the wiring needed to provide electricity to the outlet, you must install a larger gang box in your wall. It is important you use the correct size gang box to avoid a possible fire hazard, and to ensure that the wiring stay securely connected to the outlet.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the wall studs in your laundry area by sliding an electronic stud finder over the drywall. Mark the location of the wall studs with masking tape or a pencil.

    • 2

Put a mark on the wall between the studs about 3 to 4 feet above the floor. This height is recommended by the National Electrical Code.

    • 3

Remove the template from inside a two-gang, 25 cubic inch old work electrical box. Position the template over the mark you made on the wall and carefully trace around it.

    • 4

Push the pointed end of a wallboard saw through the drywall along the trace line. Carefully cut a hole in the drywall following along the trace line with the saw.

    • 5

Slip the two-gang old work box into the hole in the drywall. Turn the screw located on the top right of the box and the screw located on the bottom left of the box clockwise until tight. There are plastic wings attached to the screws that flip up behind the drywall when the screws are turned. Tightening the screws secures the new dryer outlet gang box to the wall.
