How to Ground a Jetted Bathtub

A jetted bathtub, also known as a whirlpool tub, contains a motor that operates a series of water jets at the push of a button, allowing you to experience the relaxation of a hot tub at a fraction of the cost. Because your jetted bathtub's motor runs on electricity, grounding the motor is crucial to protecting yourself from injury.   Turn off the breaker that controls the electricity for the tub. This protects you from accidentally shocking yourself while installing a grounding wire.

  Locate and open the jetted tub's electrical access panel. This will vary depending on how the tub was installed, but electrical access panels for jetted tubs are generally located in the wall behind the tub, with an access door above the tub or in the adjacent room.

  Locate the jetted tub's motor. The size and shape of the motor will vary depending on who manufactured it. Most tub motors, however, are closed-off cylinders set apart from the tub's pump.

  Loosen the grounding screw on the motor. Depending on the type of motor you have, the grounding screw will be located either on the cylinder head or directly beneath the cylinder.

  Wrap a length of solid #8 copper wire beneath the base of the screw head. Tighten the screw back into place.

  Split the ends of the copper wire. Run the copper wire to all of the tub's metal components. Secure the wire ends in place with electrical tape.
